In the rural countryside of France, the 3 castles stand today as historical monuments, and the former glory that once gave the structures their reputation has been left without a trace. In the olden days, these manmade forts claim the natural landscape as defensive lookouts for civilization to grow. Today, these castles are left as ruins, slowly consumed by invasive plants, which now claim the sovereignty of these lands. While nature and architecture exist as elements on opposite ends of the spectrum, the treehouse physically manifests itself as a balance point between the two. This typology serves to counteract the narrative of nature as an invasive element on site, negotiating with nature to provide comfortable spaces for its inhabitants.

Our proposal seeks to simulate a harmonic relationship between nature and architecture by optimizing the inhabitant’s interaction with nature through physical and visual connections with the outdoors. Habitable spaces are placed to circumscribe the tree, which becomes the definitive element that drives the programmatic organization of the living spaces. The form of the modular treehouse is given by ribbon-like exterior shells, intending to encapsulate the interior space while framing views of the landscape and the historic ruins.

The two modules designed to accommodate different user types are matched with minimalistic interiors to emphasize a sense of calmness and serenity. The smaller module offers a cozy enclosure for smaller parties, providing basic needs to the user. The bigger module offers a comfortable living space for bigger visiting parties. In addition, it features a wellness tea room, providing a serene congregation space for snacks and afternoon tea whilst looking over the amazing landscape.

An operable panel system installed enhances the objective to optimize views into nature. Within the slide tracks of the mullions sits opaque and glass panels for users to close or open at their own discretion. When closed, it provides privacy and shading for the sleeping quarters. When opened, ventilation and natural sunlight are introduced into the interior space, allowing users to experience the ephemeral qualities of the outdoors while sheltered from the elements.
